About PE WSQ > Graduate Diploma > Manufacturing Operations Management

The Precision Engineering Workforce Skills Qualifications (PE WSQ) Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) is a joint initiative by the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) to provide hands-on training to equip future PE professionals in the basic understanding of the principles involved in the field of MOM which focuses on the effective planning, scheduling, use, and control of a manufacturing organization through the study of concepts from industrial engineering, management information systems, production management, inventory management, and other functions as they affect the organization.

This programme will be conducted through a series of lectures, software tools demonstrations and hands-on model building exercises in selected industrial applications. It aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skill sets required to perform their tasks effectively in the area of Manufacturing Operations Management. Specifically, it will enhance your functional knowledge of manufacturing operations management, provides the knowledge and skills for you to identify opportunities for improving the efficiency across the processes of your organization's supply chain, streamlining your production operations, maximizing customer satisfaction by meeting delivery deadline, increasing profitability by optimizing your organization's inventory investment and enhancing your credibility among peers, employers, and customers.

This programme is relevant for Production Supervisors, Industrial Engineering Engineer, Production Engineer, Planners, Schedulers, Production Managers, Production Control Managers, and other professionals involved in Production and inventory management, Shop floor operations management, Supply chain management, Procurement, and Materials management etc. from the Precision Engineering, Electronics, Aerospace and Automotive sectors.

Unit 1: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
This course will provide a fundamental understanding of ERP solution that is widely used by industries to manage companies’ resources. All key modules in an ERP system will be introduced in the course. Students are given a broadbased understanding of how basic business processes such as sales and procurement management are represented within an ERP solution and how they are integrated within the ERP solution. Main techniques used in ERP system will be taught. Students will apply those techniques through hands-on sessions. In addition, Excel tools will be introduced. Students will use Excel tools to do exercises.

Course Outline
1. Overview of ERP Solution
2. Master Production Scheduling (MPS) - 1
3. Master Production Scheduling (MPS) - 2
4. Excel Revisited
5. Sales Order Management
6. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) - 1
7. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) - 2
8. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) - 3
9. Capacity Management
10. Extended ERP System
11. Sourcing and Purchasing
12. ERP Solution Selection and Implementation

Unit 2: Operations Analysis
This course introduces students to the fundamental analytic methods in operations management. It is meant to give students a firm understanding in various techniques and practical tools that are commonly used in the analysis of OM problems. The course starts with an introduction to queuing systems and how to manage and simulate them. Queues are the basic tools in modeling production and service systems. Optimization is another skill that is fundamental to OM analysis. Students will learn to formulate problems, learn linear programming and how to solve simple optimization problems using a mathematical tool. The third topic is on networks. Graphs and trees will be taught and their applications to various problems in OM will be elucidated. These first three topics will be supported by various hands-on exercises using Matlab, Lindo, and FlexSim. The fourth topic teaches the students advanced techniques in modeling and simulation. Through various demonstrations and exercises using FlexSim, students will learn how to model complex production and service systems and how to analyze and optimize them. The last topic sums up this course by showing the students how the techniques learnt can be applied in OM through simple problems in planning, scheduling, forecasting, inventory control and logistics.

Course Outline
1. Queuing Systems
2. Optimization
3. Networks
4. Advanced simulation techniques
5. Applications

Unit 3: Shop Floor Execution & Control
This module will provide the student with an understanding of shop floor tracking and control. Various functions such as resource allocation and tracking, production unit dispatching, performance analysis, and data acquisition will be covered. Different types of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks will be taught through practical sessions.

Course Outline
1. Introduction to Shop Floor Execution & Control
2. Network and Communications
3. Wireless technologies and wireless sensor networks
4. Data Collection & Auto-ID Technologies
5. Machine Process Monitoring
6. Database Management Systems
7. Manufacturing Data Mining Methods
8. Dynamic Resource Allocation & Dispatch Optimisation
9. Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA)

Unit 4: Advanced Planning & Scheduling (APS)
This course will provide an understanding of techniques that are widely used for generating finite capacity plan and schedule for factory operations. An overview of the field and issues will be followed by detailed discussions of the major techniques, mainly the heuristics- and simulation-based techniques. Case studies based on industry applications will be presented to demonstrate the benefits of using these techniques. A unique feature about this course is the hands-on sessions which the participants will have the opportunity to build planning and scheduling models using both the heuristics- and simulation-based software. Understanding of these techniques will allow planning and scheduling professionals and their managers to grasp the technical details of advanced Planning and Scheduling system and apply it to improve their factory performance.
